Miyake Kougei in Kyoto City is a workshop specializing in hand-painted uchikake, or formal bridal kimonos. It was founded by Nobumi Miyake, an artisan skilled in Kyo-yuzen (hand-painting and gold glaze techniques). In this experience, you can observe a demonstration of the five primary steps in applying gold glaze and mother-of-pearl inlays, out of nearly 20 steps involved in crafting a kimono. After the tour, you will get to enjoy a hands-on experience with the gold glazing process using postcard-sized uchikake fabric.

There are three courses as follows, and each course has its own day and time,

A. “Workshop Tour” Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

This one-hour course allows you to see the actual works, the workshop, and the kimono-making process.

B. “Workshop Tour + Gold Painting (Kinsai) Craft Experience” Every Tuesday and Thursday, 10:00am-12:00pm

The workshop is in addition to the actual work and a tour of the workshop,

In this two-hour course, you can make a postcard-sized piece of artwork using gold powder and other materials, and take it home with you.

C. “Workshop Tour + Craftsman Experience” Every Tuesday and Thursday from 16:00 to 18:00, every Saturday from 13:00 to 15:00

In addition to observing actual works, the workshop, and the kimono-making process,
In this 2-hour course, you can actually experience the process of kimono making from the preliminary work to the finishing touches, such as dyeing 100% silk kimono fabric, laying out the mold for komon; a traditional Japanese pattern, and applying gold leaf.

Indulge in sweet and sour meatballs, a vibrant platter of sashimi with tuna, salmon, bonito, and yellowtail, and the comforting taste of stir-fried glass noodles. Savor crispy fried delights like sesame tofu and curry spring rolls, complemented by a fresh salad and shrimp coated in creamy mayonnaise. Nobu Miyake's Profile

Miyake Kougei is an uchikake workshop founded by Nobumi Miyake, a traditional craftsman skilled in Kyo-yuzen (hand-painting and gold glaze techniques). He crafts unique and exceptional uchikake, recognized for their distinct artistic vision. His expertise and aesthetics have gained international recognition, leading to collaborations with foreign film productions (DC Comics).

In 2019, he launched the kimono brand NOB MIYAKE, aiming to create products that break stereotypes and resonate with contemporary needs worldwide. Alongside showcasing Japan's traditional crafts globally, he is dedicated to mentoring the next generation, passing down these cherished traditions and skills.
