Kyoto Samurai Experience

In modern times, the Japanese sword, or "Nihonto," has become one of Japan's representative art pieces. Behind its beauty lies a functional artistry of "unbreakable, unbending, and sharp," reflecting the history of Japan and its contemporary context. When discussing the renowned "Bushido" (Samurai way), the Japanese sword holds not only a role as a weapon but also embodies the unique values of the Japanese people. Exploring Japanese culture through the lens of the Japanese sword allows for an expansion of perspectives.

Understanding the Japanese sword involves not only delving into its history but also learning how it is practically used and the significance of the cutting act. As a first step, participants engage in practicing forms with a wooden sword, learning cutting techniques. Additionally, handling a real Japanese sword and attempting to cut a straw mat further enhances understanding through a valuable experience of cutting with a real blade.

Furthermore, the relationship between the Japanese sword and Zen Buddhism, often expressed as "Ken Zen Ichi Nyo" (Sword and Zen are One), is significant. This relationship suggests that training the body with the sword and refining the mind through Zen form a mutual connection, leading to a harmonious balance of a healthy body and mind. In contemporary times, Zen and Kendo (Way of the Sword) serve as tools for mental control and healing, proving to be beneficial in personal life.

Experiencing the Samurai way of life is a must at least once in a lifetime.
