🏮 Jidai Matsuri: Kyoto’s Festival That Brings History to Life

Every autumn, as the air turns crisp and the maple leaves begin to glow, Kyoto celebrates one of its most majestic traditions; the Jidai Matsuri, or Festival of the Ages.
Held every October 22, this grand procession transforms the city into a living timeline of Japan’s history.

⛩️ A Festival Rooted in Time

The Jidai Matsuri was first celebrated in 1895, marking the 1,100th anniversary of Kyoto’s founding as the capital of Japan.

It was also created to honor Heian Jingu Shrine, built in dedication to Emperor Kanmu - the visionary who established Heian-kyo, the ancient name for Kyoto.

Today, the festival remains a proud symbol of Kyoto’s deep respect for its heritage.

👘 A Living History Parade

As morning light fills the streets, over 2,000 participants dressed in meticulously recreated costumes begin their journey from the Kyoto Imperial Palace to Heian Jingu Shrine.

You’ll see samurai in armor, noblewomen in layered silk robes, scholars, artisans, and even commoners - each representing a different era, from the Meiji period all the way back to the Heian era (794–1185).

Every detail; the colors, fabrics, hairstyles, and accessories - has been lovingly crafted to bring Japan’s past back to life.

The procession moves gracefully through the heart of Kyoto:
from Kyoto Gyoen (Imperial Palace) → Kawaramachi Street → Heian Jingu Shrine.

Locals and visitors line the streets, cameras ready, as the parade unfolds like a moving museum of history.
