🐢 A Symbol of Longevity and Prosperity
In Japan, turtles are revered as auspicious creatures—often paired with cranes in the proverb:
“Cranes live a thousand years, turtles live ten thousand.”
The turtle symbolizes long life, good fortune, and wealth, as its shell resembles an ancient gold coin (kobangata).
The octagonal shape (hakkaku) further enhances the auspicious meaning. The number 8 (八) represents growth and infinity, and the shape is cherished globally—including in Christianity, where the number eight symbolizes resurrection and renewal.
